Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
