Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."
Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
